How to Get IELTS 7.0+ in 6 Months

A 7.0 on IELTS unlocks Canadian visas, top universities, and Gulf tech jobs. Here is a realistic six-month plan built for how Moroccan learners study.

Scoring 7.0 on IELTS means roughly C1 โ€” confident, clear, with only occasional inaccuracies. For Moroccan students, it is the threshold that opens doors: Canadian Express Entry, UK masters programs at Manchester or Edinburgh, jobs at OCP's international subsidiaries, remote tech roles paid in euros. The good news: if you are a solid B1 today, six months is enough. But only if your plan is honest about your time.

Months 1โ€“2: Rebuild the foundation

Do not touch IELTS practice tests yet. Your first eight weeks are for grammar consolidation and daily listening. Pick one grammar book (we recommend Murphy's English Grammar in Use โ€” intermediate) and finish it cover to cover at a rhythm of two units per day. In parallel, listen to one BBC 6-Minute English episode every morning on your commute. By week 8 you should be able to take notes on what you hear without stopping.

Vocabulary matters more than grammar at this stage. Install Anki, download a B2 frequency deck, and spend 15 minutes a day. Twenty new words per day is the sweet spot โ€” fewer feels lazy, more and you forget.

Months 3โ€“4: Build the four skills

Now you specialize. Each week, write two Task 2 essays (the 250-word argumentative one) โ€” that is the single highest-leverage activity for your overall band. Get them corrected, ideally by a C1+ human, not just by an AI. For speaking, record yourself answering Part 2 cue cards for 90 seconds every day. Play it back. You will hate the first ten recordings โ€” do them anyway.

For reading, switch from news sites to academic-style material: The Economist, Aeon, The Conversation. For listening, move from BBC 6-Minute to full TED Talks and academic lectures. The jump in density is the point.

Months 5โ€“6: Test conditions, every week

The last two months are almost entirely test practice. Do one full IELTS mock per week, strictly timed, ideally on a Saturday morning because that is when your real test will be. The book to use is Cambridge IELTS 18 (or the most recent). After each mock, spend two hours analyzing every mistake โ€” what type of question tripped you, what vocabulary gap caused it.

By week 22 you should be hitting 7.0 consistently on your mocks. Book the real test for week 24. Do not book it earlier out of nerves, do not delay out of perfectionism. Show up on the date and trust the system.
